At Glór na nÓg we understand that accidents happen from time to time. We have a detailed procedure for managing accidents and incidents. However we follow strict guidelines to help prevent accidents. The health and safety of all the children, families, staff and visitors who use our service is of most importance to us. The Accident and Incident Policy is Underpinned by: The Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act (2005), the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007-2020 and the Early years service Regulations 2016 are the governing legislation. It is the policy of Glór na nÓg to promote the health, well-being and safety, of all children and adults involved in our service through regularly reviewing and following our procedures on accident and incident prevention and management procedures.

Accident procedure:

  1. The Centre Manager should be alerted
  2. A first aid trained adult will assess the situation (it is a mandatory requirement that all staff are first aid trained)
  3. The Centre Manager will call the local doctor on call or an ambulance as appropriate
  4. The Manager will provide the Emergency Service with the Child‟s name, contact numbers, and any known allergies/medical records on file, or other information deemed appropriate.
  5. The Manager will contact and inform the Child‟s parents/guardians.
  6. If parents are not contactable or not on hand and it is deemed necessary to take a child to a GP or a Hospital Emergency Department – two members of staff will accompany the child and remain with the child until a parent or guardian can attend.
  7. Staff remaining on site will re-assure other children and if necessary explain the accident to other parents.

Adults that witnessed an accident should complete an Accident Report Form. If an accident does not warrant outside intervention, the first aid trained staff member will treat any injury sustained and will complete an accident form together with any other adult that witnessed the accident.

This will be read and signed by the Centre Manager and discussed with the parent/guardian at collection time.

The parent/guardian should be requested to sign the form which should be kept on the child's file.

Following any accidents or incidents, a Responsible Person conducts an accident/incident investigation, prepares an accident/incident report and ensures implementation of required remedial actions.

Incident procedure:

The Centre Manager should be alerted and the incident explained calmly and professionally e.g. where a child has bitten another child. Treatment should be administered as appropriate.

Children should be re-assured and the matter dealt with in accordance with the code of behaviour.

The incident should be recorded in the Incident Book by the staff member.

The incident should be discussed with the parent/guardian at collection time and the parent should be requested to sign the Incident Book.

If the incident re-occurs a meeting should be convened with the parents/guardians to discuss and agree how it will be addressed and resolved.

 N.B.

1. All accidents should be reported to our insurance company.

2. Injuries to any employee as a result of an accident while at work where the injury results in the employee being unable to carry out their normal work duties for more than three consecutive days, excluding the day of the accident, should be reported to the HSA.
